Driving in Skardu, honestly
Skardu is the gateway to Baltistan and, for trekkers, to Concordia and K2. The Skardu Road from Gilgit has been rebuilt and is now a comfortable six or seven hours; the alternative is the flight from Islamabad, which is magnificent when it operates and cancelled when it does not. From town, Shigar and Khaplu are day trips, Shangrila and Upper Kachura are half-days, and Deosai — the second-highest plateau in the world — is a full day on a track that genuinely requires four-wheel drive and a driver who has crossed the river fords before. This is Land Cruiser country and nothing less.
