B4, B6 and B7 Armour Levels Explained — What You Are Actually Renting

"Bulletproof" is a marketing word. The industry works in protection levels, and the difference between them is the difference between stopping a pistol round and stopping a rifle round. If you are specifying an armoured vehicle for government, diplomatic or executive movement in Pakistan, this is the vocabulary you need.

The standards

Most vehicles are described against the European VPAM / BRV or the older EN 1063 (B-levels) standards. The levels you will actually be quoted are:

LevelStopsTypical use
B4Handgun rounds up to .44 MagnumBasic executive protection, urban
B6Rifle rounds — 7.62×51 NATO / AK-pattern 7.62×39Diplomatic, government, high-threat urban
B7Armour-piercing rifle rounds, 7.62×51 APExtreme threat, military-adjacent

The gap between B4 and B6 is the important one. A B4 vehicle is protected against handguns; against a rifle it offers very little. In an environment where the realistic threat involves a Kalashnikov, B4 is not a lower grade of the right answer — it is the wrong answer. B6 is the working standard for protected civilian movement in Pakistan, and it is what we field.

What B6 actually involves

Armouring is not a bolt-on kit. A properly built B6 vehicle has:

  • Multi-layer ballistic glass, typically 38–50mm thick, laminated with polycarbonate on the inside face so it does not spall into the cabin.
  • A hardened passenger cell — ballistic steel or composite panels behind the door skins, in the pillars, the roof, the firewall and the bulkhead behind the rear seats.
  • Overlap protection at the door frames, so a round cannot pass through the gap between a door and its aperture.
  • Run-flat inserts allowing the vehicle to keep moving on damaged tyres.
  • Battery, fuel tank and ECU protection, because immobilising a vehicle is as effective as penetrating it.
  • Upgraded suspension, brakes and often the alternator, because the car now weighs 800–1,200 kg more than it did.
That last point is the one people underestimate. An armoured Land Cruiser handles, stops and accelerates differently from a standard one. This is precisely why the driver matters as much as the vehicle.

Why the driver is half the product

A security-trained driver is not a chauffeur with a clean shirt. The relevant skills are route planning and variation, recognising surveillance, maintaining spacing so the vehicle is never boxed in, knowing where the safe havens are on a given route, and being able to reverse a heavy vehicle out of a blocked street at speed. We supply armoured vehicles with drivers trained for protected movement, and we will not rent the vehicle without one.

How to specify a booking properly

When you enquire, we will ask — and you should have answers to:

  • What is the movement? Airport to compound, city meetings, intercity, or a multi-day programme.
  • Which cities? Islamabad and Rawalpindi are routine; Peshawar and Lahore are regular; some destinations involve permits.
  • Does your organisation have a security policy the vehicle must comply with? Many missions and NGOs mandate a minimum level.
  • Is a convoy required? Lead and follow vehicles change the planning entirely.
  • Who else is involved? If you have your own close-protection team, we coordinate rather than duplicate.

Honest limitations

An armoured car is a mobile safe room, not immunity. It buys time and options: it lets a driver get you out of a situation rather than having the situation resolved inside the vehicle. It does not make a badly planned movement safe, and no protection level substitutes for not being in the wrong place at a predictable time.

Anyone who sells you a vehicle without asking about the movement is selling a rental, not protection. Ask about the driver's training before you ask about the glass thickness.

Availability and lead time

Armoured vehicles are limited units — nationwide, not just in our fleet. Give us as much notice as you can: a few days is comfortable for a single vehicle, and a multi-vehicle convoy needs about a week. See bulletproof car rental for how we handle enquiries, or the B6 Land Cruiser specification.
