Swat is the valley that surprises people: broad, green, watered by its own river, with Buddhist archaeology scattered through it and a ski resort at Malam Jabba. The Swat Expressway has cut the drive from Islamabad to Mingora to around four hours, which makes a three-day loop very comfortable. Past Mingora the road narrows through Bahrain and Madyan and the last run up to Kalam is slow going; Ushu and Mahodand beyond it need a proper 4x4 and a driver who has done it. Winters close the upper valley.
