Which Car to Rent for Pakistan's Roads
Choosing between a sedan, crossover, 4x4 and van for Pakistani conditions — city grids, motorways, mountain passes and unpaved tracks, with honest recommendations per route.

The right rental in Pakistan is decided by the worst 10% of your route, not the average. Here is how to match the vehicle to the road.
City only — Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore
Take the smallest comfortable car. Roads are paved, traffic is dense, and parking is the binding constraint. A Honda City, Toyota Yaris or, for a hybrid fuel bill, a Toyota Aqua does everything an SUV does in town while being easier to park and cheaper to run. For one or two people on a tight budget, a Daihatsu Mira is genuinely sufficient.
Do not book a Land Cruiser for a week of city meetings. It costs several times as much, is worse in traffic, and arrives at the same time.
Motorway intercity — Islamabad to Lahore, Peshawar, Faisalabad
Any sedan. The M-1 and M-2 are excellent divided motorways and the limiting factor is comfort over four hours, not capability. A Corolla Altis or Altis Grande with cruise control is the sweet spot. A hybrid crossover like the Corolla Cross adds ride height for the last mile at either end.
Hill stations — Murree, Nathia Gali, Abbottabad
A sedan manages this in good weather. In winter, or if rain is forecast, take a crossover or SUV: the final ascents are steep, the surfaces suffer badly each winter, and snow can arrive with little notice. This is where the MG HS earns its keep — enough clearance and traction for the conditions, far cheaper than a full 4x4.
Mountain valleys — Naran, Kaghan, Swat, Kalam
SUV, and a proper one. Paved sections alternate with broken tarmac, single-lane stretches above the river, and rough ground on the final approaches. A Land Cruiser is the default; a Hiace works for groups on the main valley roads but not on the rough tail ends.
The approach to Lake Saif-ul-Malook above Naran usually needs a local jeep transfer regardless of what you arrive in. Plan for it rather than being surprised.
Karakoram Highway, Deosai, Khunjerab
Land Cruiser with a driver who runs these routes. This is not a preference, it is the whole category: altitude, landslide zones, river fords on the Deosai track, no phone coverage and no recovery service. A crossover will physically get to Hunza on the paved KKH; it will not get you across Deosai, and it is the wrong vehicle to be in if the road gives way.
Groups of six or more
One Hiace beats two cars: cheaper per seat, arrives together, and luggage goes in the bay rather than on laps. Above 13 passengers we arrange a coaster through the partner network.
Weddings and appearances
Different logic entirely — here the car is a prop. A Honda Civic photographs best, a white Land Cruiser reads as authority, and matched pairs make a convoy look deliberate rather than accidental. See wedding car rental.
