Islamabad Airport Arrival Guide: Transport, SIMs and Getting Into the City

Islamabad International Airport (IATA: ISB) opened in 2018 and is a straightforward modern airport. The one thing that catches visitors out is the distance: it is about 30 km from the city, so arriving without a plan is a worse mistake here than at most airports.

Before you land

  • Give your flight number to whoever is collecting you. Any competent operator tracks the flight and adjusts to the actual landing time.
  • Have your hotel address written down, in English is fine. Sector addresses like "F-7/2" mean more to a local driver than a hotel name.
  • Carry some US dollars or euros to change at the airport if you have no rupees. Rates at the terminal are acceptable for a small amount.

Immigration and customs

Pakistan's e-visa is now the normal route for tourists and business visitors, and it is processed online before travel. Have the approval printed or downloaded — the airport wifi is not something to rely on at that moment. Immigration queues at peak arrival times (late night and early morning, when most long-haul flights land) can take 30–45 minutes. Customs is usually a formality.

SIM cards

Buy your SIM at the airport. The desks in arrivals sell Jazz, Zong, Telenor and Ufone, and they will register it against your passport there and then — which is a legal requirement and a genuine hassle to sort out later in a shop.

  • Jazz and Zong have the best coverage on the northern routes. If Hunza or Skardu is in your plan, take one of those.
  • Data packages are inexpensive. Buy more than you think you need.
  • Coverage in the mountains is patchy regardless of provider. Download offline maps before you leave the city.

Getting into the city

OptionTypical costNotes
Pre-booked car with driverFixed, agreed in advanceMeets you inside arrivals, tracks your flight, no negotiation
Airport taxi rankNegotiated on the spotAvailable, but expect to haggle at 3am with no reference price
Ride-hailing (Careem / inDrive)MeteredNeeds a working local SIM and data before you can book
Hotel shuttleVariesOnly some hotels, and usually on a fixed schedule

The reason we push pre-booking is not sales: it is that the taxi rank at 3am after a 9-hour flight, in a currency you have not used before, is the single most common way visitors start a trip badly. A fixed-price airport transfer removes it.

Allow 40–55 minutes from the terminal to the F sectors or the Diplomatic Enclave, and a little over an hour to Rawalpindi's Saddar area in traffic.

Arriving late at night

Most long-haul arrivals land between midnight and 6am. Everything still works — our airport pickups run 24/7 and hotels expect late check-ins — but confirm two things in advance: that your hotel has a night porter expecting you, and that your driver has your flight number rather than a clock time.

Onward to Murree, Naran or Hunza

If your plan is to head north immediately, do not. The drive to Murree is short enough to do on arrival day, but Naran is six to seven hours and Hunza is a two-day drive. Sleep in Islamabad first; the mountains are not improved by doing them on no rest.

A short arrival checklist

  • SIM registered at the airport desk
  • Some rupees changed at the terminal
  • Driver confirmed with your flight number, not a time
  • Hotel address in sector format
  • Offline maps downloaded
  • A rough plan for day one that does not involve a long drive
