Muzaffarabad, the capital of Azad Jammu & Kashmir, sits where the Neelum and Jhelum rivers meet. Most of our trips here are family visits, official work, or the first leg of a Neelum Valley tour.
The route
Climb the Murree Expressway, pass Murree, and descend through the pine forest to Kohala Bridge on the Jhelum, the border between Punjab and AJK. From Kohala the road follows the river to Muzaffarabad. In winter, snow above Murree can slow the first half; an SUV is the safer choice from December to February.
What to see
- Domel, where the Neelum meets the Jhelum.
- Red Fort and the riverfront.
- Pir Chinasi, a viewpoint about an hour above the city.
Going further
Muzaffarabad is the gateway to the Neelum Valley. Most people stay one night here before continuing.
Foreign nationals should check the current requirements for visiting Azad Kashmir before booking; some areas near the Line of Control need permission.
