Skardu has become the north's most popular destination, and the road there is far better than its reputation — but it is long. Plan for two driving days each way.
The route
From Islamabad up the Karakoram Highway through Besham and Chilas to Jaglot, then turn east onto the Jaglot–Skardu road, which follows the Indus through a deep gorge for about 165 km. The rebuilt road is fully paved; the gorge section is narrow and slow, and you should expect occasional short delays for rockfall clearance. In summer you can also start via Naran and Babusar Pass.
Where to break the journey
Chilas is the usual overnight halt. Families who prefer a calmer first day stop in Besham. Starting from Islamabad at dawn gets you to Chilas by late afternoon.
Which car
We recommend an SUV — Prado, Land Cruiser or Fortuner — for the long hours and for side trips. Deosai Plains, open roughly from July to September, and the road to Shigar and Khaplu are fine in a good 4x4. Groups take a Hiace or Coaster for the highway, with local jeeps for Deosai if needed.
Flying one way
Some clients fly between Islamabad and Skardu and have the car meet them, or fly one way and drive the other. Tell us your flight and we will plan the pickup.
What to see
- Shangrila & Upper Kachura lakes — 30 minutes from town.
- Shigar Fort and the cold desert at Sarfaranga.
