Swat is the easiest of the big northern valleys to reach, thanks to the Swat Motorway. You are in Mingora in under four hours, and the valley road then climbs past Fizagat, Madyan and Bahrain to Kalam.
The route
From Islamabad take the M-1 towards Peshawar, join the Swat Motorway (M-16) and follow it to Chakdara, then the N-95 up the valley. The motorway part is fast; the stretch above Mingora is a two-lane mountain road and the pace drops.
Mingora, Malam Jabba or Kalam
- Mingora and lower Swat — museums, the White Palace at Marghazar, the river.
- Malam Jabba — ski slopes and chairlift, about an hour from Mingora. Snow in winter makes an SUV essential.
- Kalam — the upper valley, base for Ushu Forest, Mahodand Lake and Gabin Jabba. Mahodand's last stretch is usually done by local jeep.
Which car
A sedan reaches Mingora easily in any season. For Kalam, Malam Jabba in winter, or a family with luggage, take an SUV. Larger groups take a Hiace.
A typical three-day plan
- Day 1 — Islamabad to Mingora, afternoon at Marghazar.
- Day 2 — Up the valley to Kalam via Madyan and Bahrain.
- Day 3 — Ushu Forest in the morning, return to Islamabad.
