Naran is the classic northern holiday for families from the twin cities, and the drive has improved enormously since the Hazara Motorway opened. You are at Mansehra in under two hours; the remaining distance through Balakot, Paras and Kaghan is a slower valley road beside the Kunhar River.
How long it really takes
Plan on six hours with a lunch stop. In peak season — June, July and Eid holidays — the narrow stretch after Balakot and Naran bazaar itself slow down considerably. Leaving Islamabad by 6 or 7 am gets you through Balakot before the traffic builds.
When the road is open
Naran town is reachable most of the year, but heavy snow closes the valley in deep winter, and the road beyond Naran to Lalusar Lake and Babusar Top normally opens only from late May or June until about mid-October. Read our Babusar Pass guide before planning a crossing.
Which car
A comfortable sedan reaches Naran in summer. For Babusar Top, the Lake Saif-ul-Malook track or any trip in spring and autumn, choose an SUV — Fortuner, Prado or Land Cruiser. Saif-ul-Malook's final track is usually done in a local jeep from Naran; your driver will arrange it.
A typical three-day plan
- Day 1 — Islamabad to Naran, stopping at Balakot and Kiwai.
- Day 2 — Lake Saif-ul-Malook in the morning, Lalusar Lake and Babusar Top in the afternoon (in season).
- Day 3 — Return, with lunch at Shogran turn-off or Balakot.
The driver's lodging and meals on overnight trips are included in what we agree with you in writing.
